The Best Argentine Tango Shoes: How to Choose

A good Argentine tango shoe disappears on your foot — secure enough to pivot on, flexible enough to feel the floor. There’s no single best pair, so here’s how we recommend tango shoes at our Ottawa and Montréal showrooms, by the dancer you are.

What makes a good tango shoe

Tango shoes are made for pivots, ochos and the close embrace: a secure criss-cross or T-strap that locks the heel, a flexible suede sole, and a heel (usually 6–7.5 cm) placed to balance you over the ball of the foot. Open or closed toe is personal preference — both work for tango and milonga.

Best for beginners

Start with a lower, stable heel and a strap that genuinely holds your heel — security matters more than height while you learn to pivot. Our heel-height guide covers the shapes; browse options in tango shoes.

Best for comfort and long milongas

For all-night dancing, look for a well-padded insole and a flexible sole. A slightly lower heel and a secure fastening save your feet over four hours on the floor.

Best for wider feet

Tango shoes often run narrow. If they pinch, start with wide-fit dance shoes — every genuine wide and extra-wide pair we carry.

Open toe vs closed toe

Open-toe styles are cooler and show the foot’s line; closed-toe feels more secure and supportive. Neither is “better” — it’s down to preference and how much coverage you like. Try both if you can.

Getting the size and fit right

Tango shoes fit snug so the foot doesn’t slide on pivots — most dancers go a half to a full size down. See our fit & sizing guide and size chart, or book a fitting in Ottawa or Montréal and try a few pairs.
